From Tag to Where’s Waldo to the Easy-Bake-Oven

waldo3-resized-600.jpgRemember the game of Tag?  You and a bunch of friends stood in a clump on someone’s lawn and in rapid fire everyone yelled, “Not it!”  The last one to say “Not it” was “it”.  And then the poor “it” kid ran around the neighborhood trying desperately to tag someone so they wouldn’t be “it” anymore.

For the last 10 years, enterprise mobility in companies of all sizes was a game of Tag.  Ask the IT organization who is responsible for providing mobile device access to their enterprise applications.   “Not it!”  Call Marketing.  “Not it!”  CFO?  “Not it!”

Then the game changed.  Someone brought an iPhone to work.  And suddenly the game was Where’s Waldo?  Let’s try to find someone who will help me with the foreign object in my hand.  All I want is my email.  Just email.  Anyone?

If that wasn’t shocking enough, companies then were invaded by other iOS devices and Android devices and now even Microsoft 8 is considered a mobile solution.  Suddenly business people in every functional area of your company wanted enterprise mobility.  Business users are now asking the same question but they want more.  Who can I go to?  Who can help me get access to SAP, Oracle, SQL Server?  Heck, I’ll take my daily spreadsheet that tells me what’s happening in my organization.  If only I can see it on my mobile device.

Well it’s 2013.  The game changed again.  The need to yell “Not it” has evolved into, “I can do that!”  I’m “it”.  As with all technologies, things eventually get faster, easier and less expensive.

So now we’ve arrived in the Easy-Bake-Oven phase of enterprise mobility.  You, as a business person, can provide access to the enterprise from your mobile device.  Access.  What a non-threatening word.  And instead of asking IT if you can turn on the oven, you can bake your own apps and be more productive without hunting for the mobile app development group in your company.

You may not work up a sweat running around the company as the “it” kid, but you can enjoy what you’ve deployed and stop chasing the promise of enterprise mobility by doing it yourself.
